Skincare Myths Debunked: What Really Happens During a Facial

Here is a breakdown of some common skincare myths related to facials and what really happens during a facial:

Myth 1: Facials Are Just a Relaxing Spa Treatment.

Fact: While facials are indeed relaxing and spa-like, they serve a more profound purpose. Facials involve a combination of cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, and treatment steps that aim to improve skin health, address specific concerns, and maintain overall well-being.

Myth 2: All Facials Are the Same.

Fact: There are various types of facials designed to address specific skin concerns, such as acne, anti-aging, hydration, or purifying and exfoliating. The choice of facial should be tailored to your individual needs and skin type.

Myth 3: Facials Always Cause Redness.

Fact: Not all facials cause redness. The extent of redness can depend on the type of facial, your skin sensitivity, and the products used. Many facials result in minimal or no redness, while others, like radio frequency may cause a temporary flush..

Myth 4: You Should Get a Facial Right Before a Big Event.

Fact: It's generally recommended to schedule your facial 1-2 weeks before a significant event. This allows your skin to recover from any potential redness or irritation and gives your skin time to benefit fully from the treatment or skincare products that you would use prior to the big day.

Myth 5: Facials Are Painful.

Fact: Facials are generally not painful. The facialist or esthetician should use gentle, non-invasive techniques to ensure a comfortable experience. Some treatments, like extractions, may cause minor discomfort, but they should not be excessively painful. Much like scaling your teeth, the more build up you have, the more uncomfortable the removal is.

Why is my skin flaky after applying skincare?

It is not because of dry skin, you know it but there are those flakes on your skin that seem to be dead skin cells clumping together when you rub them off. Skincare product pilling occurs when the products you apply on your skin clump together, forming small, often visible, balls or flakes. Several factors can contribute to this issue:

I have a big event coming up! When should I do a facial?

If you're planning to get a facial before a big event, it's essential to schedule it carefully to ensure that your skin looks its best on the day of the event. You need to also consider what your objectives of getting the facial are and have realistic expectations.

Here are some general guidelines on when to get a facial before a significant occasion:

  1. Schedule your facial 1-2 weeks before the big day. This timeframe allows your skin to recover from any redness, irritation, or breakouts that might occur immediately after a facial. It also ensures that your skin has time to reap the full benefits of the treatment. For many customers who do not frequently have facials that purify the skin, having one might actually cause their skin to be drier than they would normally expect due to the exfoliating nature of a facial and also, the sudden disruption to your skin’s moisture balance might cause problems like dryness in people with more sensitive skin.

What is Dermaplaning and should I try it?

Dermaplaning is a truly remarkable non-invasive skincare treatment that has been gaining popularity in recent years. Dermaplaning involves the use of a surgical scalpel or a specialized dermaplaning tool to delicately and precisely exfoliate the top layer of dead skin cells, revealing a fresh and radiant complexion underneath. Not only does this innovative technique provide an instant glow, but it also works wonders in eliminating fine vellus hairs, also known as peach fuzz, from the face.

The removal of this unwanted hair not only creates a smoother canvas for makeup application but also enhances the penetration of skincare products, allowing them to be more effective in targeting specific skin concerns. Moreover, dermaplaning has been found to stimulate collagen production, thus promoting a more youthful and plump appearance.

Why do my pimples keep recurring at the same spot?

Pimples or acne breakouts occurring repeatedly in the same spot can be due to a combination of factors which is why just using a new skincare serum might not solve your problem of recurring breakouts.

  1. Changes in hormones can lead to breakouts usually along the jawline and cheeks. The long term solution to this if it is a serious case would be to get blue light therapy done regularly or cryotherapy to destroy the oil glands but this might be too extreme as oil production is actually good as we age. We recommend keeping to a good skincare regime and keep the skin clean, pH balanced and hydrated (probably with a hydrating toner) throughout the day.

Laser treatments are everywhere. Should I do it?

Laser facial treatments have gained tremendous popularity in recent years due to their remarkable ability to effectively address a wide array of skin concerns. Some kinds of lasers are marketed as safe and with no down time but after first hand experiences and listening to many first hand stories, we find it is crucial to approach these procedures with a keen sense of caution and prudence.

While these treatments can yield remarkable results when administered by highly skilled and trained professionals in controlled environments, there may be certain situations where it becomes necessary to err on the side of caution or even avoid laser treatments altogether. Above all else, prioritizing safety and fully comprehending the potential risks associated with such procedures is of utmost importance.

What will haze do to our skin?

With the haze conditions sometimes plaguing Singapore due to neighbouring forest fires, the fine particulate matter that hangs in the air can penetrate our skin's protective barrier and infiltrate our pores, wreaking havoc on our complexion. Hazy weather traps UV rays and this increases the effects of UV exposure, making them stronger than a clear sunny day. The haze pollutants can also create free radicals in the face of UV and this causes even more oxidative stress on our skin barrier. Air pollution consists of things like UV radiation, Particulate matter (PM), hydrocarbons, organic compounds, oxides, particles, ozone, and cigarette smoke. These pollutants will create oxidative stress, harm the skin's protective barrier and break down the collagen in our skin. Living in the city already leaves our skin exposed to high levels of pollutants and the damage it causes can lead to premature aging, pigmentation problems, acne, psoriasis, acne, worsen conditions like dermatitis and eczema. This problem is of course made worse with the hazy conditions.

The B-tox Peel facial

If you are a fan of microneedling, nanoneedling or superficial skin peels, our new B-Tox facial is the next exciting procedure to try. Raw materials for this product are extracted from seaweed and the Silitox microneedles (50-200 µm) are made from the needle sea sponge.

The exfoliation from this product over the next few days would improve fine lines and age-related pigmentation. This is an exciting facial to do but while your skin looks great right after the facial and even greater over the next few days, there might be slight discomfort when you press onto your skin for the next couple of days as the micro needles are absorbed and working their magic.

RADIOFREQUENCY FACIAL

On the spectrum of anti-aging beauty treatments that helps with tightening, lifting and firming of the skin, targeting problems such as fine lines, stretch marks, lax/sagging skin, Radiofrequency and Ultrasound are the two most effective non-invasive techniques you can find on the market.

As opposed to having to endure the pain or downtime (the “downtime” is giving the body’s inner tissues enough time to recover and build its collagen and elastin), these two treatments can have you walking out of the clinic/spa and straight back into action (we would recommend keeping yourself hydrated and protected from the sun)

Our Radiofrequency machine gives off a form of electromagnetic energy that causes thermal damage within the body tissue, contracting the collagen fibers and activates fibroblasts (Key to collagen production). So you are able to actually see results from just the first session. It operates at 448 kHz frequency to stimulate cell rejuvenation and metabolism and activate fibroblasts (key to collagen production), healing damaged tissues in the body and improving blood circulation and lymphatic drainage.

Why Bojin is the best face massage there is

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is one of the best “natural” ways to maintain body health and vitality. Massage involving acupoints (the specific points reflecting visceral conditions as well as regulating the function of internal organs) and meridians (acupressure vessels) in the body has been known to have various benefits for health.

The meridians of the body are interconnected deep within us and massage enables their pathways to be smooth and unblocked, promoting the flow of lymph and blood. So by stimulating them, you are detoxing the face by helping to remove the build up of fluids that cause bloating, rejuvenate dull skin and greatly increase the blood flow which helps with collagen growth.

It is also a popular method for people who want a more v-shape jawline as it does away with the bloat and improves muscle tone, naturally with no downtime. A more lifted look (side by side comparison is often used to showcase the before and after effects) is characteristic of bojin facials.

You can imagine when the bojin facial massage is coupled with a powerful anti-oxidant oil (which we use), your face is in for a treat (we use “face” instead of “skin” as this facial goes beyond just skin deep!). In the Ritual face spa and the Face massage facial, you get to experience the benefits of the bojin face massage and microcurrent therapy which complements its effects to a Tee.

To combat signs of aging: RF therapy vs Microcurrent

What IS RF therapy?

Radio Frequency is a type of energy measured in “frequency”, or wavelengths per second. This is in the same category as sound waves that your iPhone emits, sunlight, or wifi signals, classified as part of the “electromagnetic spectrum”.

Radio Frequency has produces heat so during a radio frequency treatment heat is applied to skin’s deeper layers to stimulate the production of new collagen and elastin at the temperature of around 52 to 55 degrees celsius. Radio frequency facials are non-invasive, safe and painless. You should feel a gradual heating sensation that should be bearable, comfortable even for some. The cell turnover that is accelerated, like that in microcurrent facial take a few treatments to be seen with the naked eye but can be felt almost immediately after treatment.

What is Microcurrent?

Microcurrent facial therapy uses a low level of electrical current that is similar to the body’s natural current. The direction of the microcurrent re-educate the facial muscles. Like RF therapy, it lifts sagging skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines.

(More can be read from our previous post on microcurrent facials!)

Basically, both facials should be used together as a power combo, over time with higher frequency at the start to fight signs of aging. The Face Place is able to customize this treatment for you under our customizable bespoke facial treatments J

All about Microcurrent facials

Microcurrent machines discharge a low-voltage electrical current that similar to the low-intensity natural electrical currents already in our body cells. This current is especially helpful for healing tissues. This current is weaker in unhealthy or damaged tissues and the microcurrent therapy helps to spark the natural healing cycle. The microcurrent causes the facial muscles to “work out” by encouraging ATP (cellular energy) production in cells to create collagen and elastin in the skin. This tightens and lifts the skin and facial muscles thus reducing wrinkles

The Ultimate Skincare Regime

The rule of thumb is to start with thin consistency then go progressively thicker. And always make sure cleansing is done thoroughly with exfoliation once or twice a week! A good cleansing routine is important to prevent acne breakouts and clogged pores that will decrease the efficacy of our skincare products without stripping it of its natural oils.

Spending hundreds on your skincare products but only a few seconds on the cleansing part of your skincare routine will definitely not be doing justice to your wallet.

Moving on from the cleanser, a toner is not an absolute must but so good to have because there are so many of them, you will need to get the right kind for your skin’s needs.

How are wrinkles formed and what can we do about it?

One of the major concerns people have about their aesthetics would be features that give their age away. Years of laughter, anger, joy and pain are etched onto our faces and even without moving a muscle, our faces can mirror our overall disposition, providing cues to our character and emotions.

Imagine the happiest person you know (babies don’t count) and really think about the way his/her face look. They would most likely have crow’s feet at the end of their eyes and their facial muscles would be quick to ease into a smile at the slightest trigger. The development of their muscles over years of having such positive disposition would create deeper crow’s feet that somehow make them look even friendlier and approachable. When you think about smiles that reach the eyes, you will almost always include the crow’s feet in that picture you have in mind.
